Afterglow @ Keong Saik

This is my first food entry since I turned vegan and 80% raw. I was very excited to find Afterglow @ Keong Saik which has been opened since beginning of 2014. Because it also means I can prepare 1 less meal at home as it is not easy to find organic, vegan AND raw cafes and restaurants in Singapore. For those who missed my previous entries, this is why I have decided to turn vegan and 80% raw.

I really like how each table has its own decor of organic produce and some plants.

First up, we tried the assortment of Raw Crackers ($10) of seed crackers, seaweed crackers and spinach ‘chips’. They were nice and raw but I felt a little pricey for the quantity. And I think I am spoilt by our own kale chips recipe which have been very yummy so I think I would pass on this started in future.

For the soups, we shared a Broccoli Soup with spiced Dehydrated Broccoli ($14) and a special Mushroom Soup puree blend ($20+) not on the menu. I enjoyed the soups and like that they have been lightly warmed but not boiled so the food is still raw.

We had a raw Cauliflower ‘cous cous’ with currants, almonds, mint and parsley ($15). Cous cous gives the same texture as rice to me, but is healthier. The currants gave the dish a sweet sour tangy flavour. A good alternative to all the leafy salads I have been making at home.

For mains, my favourite has to be this Deconstructed Sushi Bowl with seasonal pickles ($16), Shiitake mushrooms, Avocado and Miso Dressing. The rice is chewy black wild rice which is much healthier option than usual white rice. The entire dish is well marinated with a hint of wasabe without being overwhelming. But the serving would probably not be sufficient for the average Singaporean male.

We also tried a special – Vegan Lasagna main ($20+) not on the usual menu. This lasagna was also beautifully done and recreate the taste and texture of usual meaty/cheesy lasagna but with healthy nut cheese and tomato. Very impressive but I guess my taste bud still has an Asian slant so the sushi deconstructed bowl still wins it for me.

Finally, I really enjoyed the dessert – Coconut Chia Seed Pudding with Mango($8) also a special on the menu. Its rich in Omega 3 from the chia seed, good fat from the coconut and vitamins from the coconut. But not suitable for cancer patients as it is very sweet. A dessert I would definitely try to recreate at home!

Overall, the meal was a little pricey at ~$110+ for 4 people and we didn’t feel very full. But I now know raw food takes a lot of effort to prepare, and organic produce is not cheap, so I hope Afterglow continues to find a way to make its raw, organic/natural dishes for affordable so more people can have clean, healthy meals! I look forward to more raw creations the next time I am back.
