Chin Chin Eating House @ Purvis Street

My family likes to eat to Chin Chin Eating House @ Purvis Street for weekday evening dinners. We have been there so many times and also introduced many friends and family there. They are efficient and good value for money (usually total $50 for 4 pax). Always crowded without fail! They have Hainanese chefs so their traditional Hainanese fare like Pork Chops are good bets! Their chicken rice is also one of my favourites; I prefer it to the other hot favourite (Yetcon) just opposite Chin Chin Eating House. Great place for local tzechar style food, especially for big groups! — Chin Chin Eating House Address: 19 Purvis Street Phone: 63374640 Hours: Daily, 7am – 9pm

Grouper King Seafood Restaurant (大洋城) @ Shaw Towers

My cousins celebrated 2 of our birthdays at Grouper King Seafood Restaurant. They bought a deal online so we had free flow of Chinese dishes, including all sorts of fish at ~$35.90/pax. I checked online and they are running a similar deal now on Qoo10. The usual price is $59/pax. As the name of the restaurant suggests, they are known for GIANT Grouper fish!! There are a few mains like main Soups, Peking Duck that can only be ordered once, but otherwise, there are at least 40 ala carte items you can re-order.   Feasting… As you can see, we had a lot of dishes including many dishes of fresh fish (I assume is grouper!) cooked in many ways. Very good value for free flow seafood dishes with the deals for $35+ for dinner, and great for family gatherings for a big group. Do note that you have pay $3-$5 more per pax depending on the drinks package picked as well; they have ala carte and free flow drinks as well. — Grouper King Seafood Restaurant (大洋城) …

Quan Xiang Yuan 泉馨园 (Jing Ji) Seafood Restaurant @ Jalan Besar

I used to frequent Quan Xiang Yuan previously with my aunt since I was a kid. Apparently, this is one of the oldest Hokkien restaurant in Singapore, founded since the 1930s. First up, we tried Quan Xiang Yuan’s traditional Prawn Roll ($8), handmade using pork, prawn and spice mix. It was well battered (fish-and-chips style) and juicy on the inside. Most prawn rolls tend to be a bit dry inside due to the frying but this one was still supple. We also had the Fish Maw Sea Cucumber Stew ($20), a must order every time we visit a Hokkien Restaraunt. This particular stew had a lot of the ingredients – Fish Maw, Sea Cucumber and Mushrooms so this is good value for money in terms of the amount of ingredients. However, the taste was just average for me. We couldn’t decide between the Fried Hokkien Noodles ($6) and Fried Hokkien Beehoon ($6) so we ordered both in small portions to share. The noodles were definitely traditional, but I think all 4 of us unanimously preferred the Beehoon! The …

Summer Palace @ Regent (Restaurant Week)

Food Quality: 7.5/10 Value for Money: 5/10 ($55++/pax – Restaurant Week) Service: 8/10 Heard a lot about Summer Palace in many lists of Chinese restaurants to try in Singapore, so was quite excited to be able to bring our family to try it out in this Restaurant Week! Summer Palace in a Cantonese restaurant, whose menus are complemented by a collection of fine Chinese art and antiques. It’s quite a small restaurant with only ~15 tables, and 2 private dining rooms are available for business and private functions. Personally find the service great.  As my parents prefer not to eat beef, we asked them if they could change the item on the menu and they were happy to change it to chicken, cooked in the same style. And halfway through the meal, we found it warm and they also quickly adjusted the temperature for us. Very good service but I guess for the price, they better had good service too! 😛 Restaurant week tasting menu! We found all the servings small (we were still hungry when we …

Beng Hiang @ Amoy – Restaurant Review

Good Quality: 8.5/10 Value for Money: 9/10 Service: 6.5/10 (no one wanted to sit us despite having made a reservation and all 4 waitresses refused to take a photo for us. very typical old chinese restaurant service 🙁 ) Last week was my dad’s birthday, and my parents usually prefer chinese food for celebrations. My new DG just went to a 35 year old restaurant, Beng Hiang, and said it was really good value for money so decided to try out the acclaimed best Hokkien restaurant in Singapore! First up – Fish Maw Thick Soup with Crab Meat (蚧肉鱼鳔羹) Yummylicious – 8.5/10. It had a lot of ingredients in it… we all dug in so fast I actually forgot to take photo until the bottom of my bowl so forgive the bad shot. Can taste the real crab meat, fish maw with superb viscosity.  Next up – Braised White Cabbage (with Chinese vinegar) 红烧白菜 My favourite for the night – 9/10! Cabbage was soft but fibrous. There were these fried fish bits that added good texture …
